The reality is that, often times, you just need to use an inches to pixels converter. Most people tend to do this when they want to print an image and they want to make sure that it will look perfect.
While some design software such as Corel Draw or Adobe Photoshop do this automatically for you, maybe you just don’t have them. Besides, you won’t be buying them just to convert pixels to inches. So, what can you do?

In order to help you, you can simply use our inches to pixels converter or our pixels to inches calculator that are available on this page. You just need to fill them with some simple values and you’ll immediately get the conversion that you need.

Even though using a simple inches to pixels converter or a pixels to inches calculator is all you need, it’s always good to know how to do the math on your own. After all, you may not have a mobile device near you that allows you to use our converters or calculators. Besides, it’s quite easy to understand and you won’t have any kind of problems doing these calculations by hand.

#1: Starting with the Basics

Before we even start explaining to you how you can easily convert pixels to inches and inches to pixels, it’ important that you know exactly what a pixel and what an inch is.

A pixel is simply a unit of an image. It is the smallest element of an image and it indicates the number of points on a 2-dimensional grid. A pixel is usually represented by dots or square.

An inch is a universally accepted unit of measurement of length. Inches are mainly used in the United States, Canada, and United Kingdom. One inch is equal to 2.54 centimeters as well as it is equal to 1/12 (0.0833) foot.

#2: Why Do You Need To Convert Pixels To Inches?

pixels-to-inches

The truth is that you will need to convert pixels to inches whenever you want to scan an image or when you want to print out a specific image.

One of the problems with resizing images when you don’t know all the variables is that if you enlarge a small pixel image, you will end up with a blurred image. So, ultimately, what you are doing here is that you are increasing the size of the image more than the image resolution. This is the same thing as saying that you are increasing the size of the image more than the dimensions of the image in pixels.

Since you want to be able to use the perfect image, you need to convert it from pixels to inches. Again, in order to do it, you can simply use our pixels to inches calculator or you can do it manually, as you will discover in just a bit.

#3: What Is The DPI? What Does It Stand For?

As you probably already know, the size of an image that you want to print out is expressed in inches. However, one of the things that you may not know is that pixels are not all the same. The reality is that pixels can have many different sizes and this ends up making it more difficult when you want to convert pixels to inches. As if this wasn’t enough, you also don’t have any specific pixels to inches ratio that you can use in order to convert the particular image from pixels to inches.

In order to deal with these constraints, we use DPI – Dots Per Inch or PPI – Pixels Per Inch. While some people tend to use the DPI as the PPI, they are actually different.

The DPI tells you how many dots of ink a printed image has. The DPI tends to be mostly used to know the printer resolution. On the other hand, the PPI tells the size of the image that the printer will print. This one tends to be mostly used to know the image resolution.

#4: Converting Pixels to Inches And Inches to Pixels Manually:

  • Converting Pixels To Inches:

In order to convert pixels to inches, you just need to know the height and width of your image to use our pixels to inches calculator. As soon as place the values in there, you will get both dimensions in inches. This conversion can be very useful when you want to display an image on a larger screen as well as when you want to print your image.

The math formula that you need to use to convert pixels to inches is pretty straightforward:

Pixels = Inches X DPI

  • Converting Inches To Pixels:

Whenever you want to scan an image that you have, you may need to use this conversion. The formula is, again very straightforward:

Inches = Pixels / DPI

#5: Inches To Pixels Conversion Table:

Whenever you need to convert inches to pixels, another useful way that you have is by knowing some of the conversions beforehand, This will allow you to do calculations faster.

Inch to Pixel (X) Conversion Table

Inch (in) Pixel (x)
0.01 0.96
0.1 9.6
1 96
2 192
3 288
5 480
10 960
20 1920
50 4800.0000000001
100 9600.0000000001
1000 96000.000000001

As you can see from the table, 1 inch is equal to 96 pixels which is the same as saying that 1 pixel is equal to 0.0104166667 inches.

So, let’s say that you want to convert 21 inches to pixels.

21 inches = 21 X 96 inches = 2016 pixels

#6: Pixel To Inch Conversion – Example

The truth is that there is nothing better than using a simple example to show you how easy it is to convert pixels to inches manually.

Let’s say that you need to print an image of 600 PPI and that your printer uses 1200 DPI. So, by looking at these numbers, you immediately know that each pixel will have 4 small dots.

Consider that your image is 200X200 pixels. So, according to the example we are using, you know that this specific image will have 800 dots.

In case you want to print this image with 50 PPI, you would get a 4” X 4” image. However, if you wanted to print this image with 25 PPI instead, you would get an 8” X 8” image. Why? Just check the calculations:

1. Number of dots on an image = DPI / PPI

So, in this case, we would have:

Number of dots = (1200 X 1200) / (600 X 600) = 4

Since 1 pixel is always equal to the number of dots, 1 pixel has 4 dots.

2. Now, you need to convert pixels to inches:

Inch = Pixel / PPI

So, in this case, and according to our example:

Inch = (200 X 200) / (50 X 50) PPI = 4 inches X 4 inches

Or with the 25 PPI:

Inch = (200 X 200) / (25 X 25) PPI = 8 inches X 8 inches

By looking at this simple example, you can say that the number of pixels will always be the same even when you adjust the size of the image.

If you use Adobe Photoshop, you probably know that this sofware adjusts all the images to 72 DPI automatically. So, in order to help you, here is a simple table that you can use with the conversions from pixels to inches and vice-versa, with a 72 DPI:

Pixels Inches
72 0.96
108 1.44
144 1.92
180 2.4
216 2.88
252 3.36
288 3.84
324 4.32
360 4.8
396 5.28
432 5.76
468 6.24
504 6.72
540 7.2
576 7.68
612 8.16
648 8.64
684 9.12
720 9.6

#7: When You Don’t Know Your DPI

The truth is that you may be missing an important value: the DPI. As we already mentioned above the DPI is related to the resolution of your screen. As a rule of thumb, most screens have a DPI of 75.
